Satisfying the sweet tooth - Jazz Apple Cafe & The Flute Bakery, Canberra

Tis' the season to be merry, and indulge in all things sweet!

I rushed around before Christmas to ensure I could get my sweet treats fix as most places close down for a couple of weeks at least.

First top. Jazz Apple Cafe outside the fountain in Civic, a relatively new shop in Canberra, I had high expectations which is probably why I felt a bit let down. The cupcakes didn't look very captivating or special - or maybe I've just been spoilt by Cupcakes on Pitt and co with their amazing decorations (taste is a totally different matter though)

Open from Monday-Friday until 3pm, I think they are open on Saturdays now as well which is good for those of us that don't work in Civic!

Christmas cupcakes galore

The service was great. The guy behind the counter was really friendly and enthusiastic with explaining what each flavour was since they didn't have any signs indicating what each cupcake was.

I also love that they put the cupcakes in a little plastic holder so it doesn't squashed

Peach melba cupcake - one of the new flavours

The icing was a bit sweet for me but the cupcake was nice, fluffy and not too dry

Next stop was my new found love, The Flute Bakery in Fyshwick, who don't reopen until the 27th of January!!! ARGH!

I finished work at noon on Christmas Eve and popped over here for a quick lunch and more importantly, to see what cakes were on offer. The shop was quite full and the bare shelves were being depleted by the second.

Beef and red wine pie

Vegetable and feta quiche

Macadamia and honey brioche - heavenly!

I spied this when purchasing the pie and quiche, and decided I wanted one for later! There were heaps left though (at least 6) and then when I sat down to eat, I noticed that suddenly there was only ONE left, so I hurriedly rushed in line mid-meal to claim my brioche. Haha

Brioche goodness

Pear and pistachio tart

Delicious crumbly and packed full of pear

Berry cheesecake

Profiterole cake

Pistachio and white chocolate mousse cake - this was amazing and my favourite out of all of them!

Ichiban Boshi - TGV, Sydney

Hit the sales in Sydney on Monday, which was probably not the greatest idea since it was a gloomy day and decided to rain non-stop, making for a terrible shopping experience.

What better way to warm up than with a massive bowl of ramen. Since we were early (just after 11am), we managed to bypass the crowds that usually gather at Ichiban Boshi on any given day.

Some people obviously had the same idea, and the seats quickly filled up

I wanted to try the new entrees, but then realised that they are only available after 6pm. Boo! Must come back for dinner to try the mini wagyu garlic steaks!

Iced green tea cappucino

The hot version

Don't really know why we bothered to order sushi at a ramen place, but this definitely failed. The sushi was abnormally massive and the rice was slightly wet and sticky. The potato salad stated on the menu was also replaced with a normal salad instead. Don't you hate it when menus state one thing, and then they replace it with something totally different? Ergh.

The ramen more than makes up for it though!

Tokyo ramen with extra corn and extra pork slices - loved the generous serving of super sweet corn kernels throughout. So yummy! Perfect for the terrible weather.

Boxing Day sales & Christmas haul

Woke up at the ungodly hour of 6:45 this morning, sans alarm, so decided I might as well get up and hit the Boxing Day sales.

My Boxing Day effort

Alot of the sales were actually the same as the pre-Christmas ones like Review and Mimco, while some of the sales before  Boxing Day were better!

Swarovski was crazy as always, I managed to get in line quite early, so I got in during the second round. If I didn't line up that early, I wouldn't have even bothered! The line was insanely long when I left.

Ended up buying 2 things, as we only had 5 minutes to browse and were getting hurried out the door:

Set of 3 rings (excuse the fat fingers eww)

Went a little crazy at Peter Alexander - cutest doggy bag!!

Pyjama bag

Hehe, love the tee!

Also bought:

*A bunch of Pleasure State lingerie from Myer for 40% off with a one day offer 30% extra off
*Skirt for work from SABA
*Review jacket for work
*Cue knit for work from the outlet at DFO
*Cooking Mama 2 for the Wii - so much fun!

As for Christmas presents, I was pretty spoilt:

I received the Sims 3 expansion pack, Marc Jacobs Lola set with body lotion and shower gel, and also a little something from T&Co. All from the lovely bf.

Since I pretty much blew one week's worth of pay in a day, I shall have to live frugally for the near future aka until payday (which might be hard since it's New Year's Eve soon eeek!)

So what post Christmas bargains did you all grab?

Capital Region Farmers Market Twilight Markets- EPIC, Canberra, and a Merry Christmas!

The Capital Region Farmers Market are held every Saturday from 8am - 11am, with a Special Twilight markets held last night. Presumably due to the Christmas demand.

I got there after work, it was nearing 6pm and some stalls had already packed up or were low on stock. It was pretty quiet.

Free range egg stall

There were mainly stalls selling vegetables and fruit, alot of stalls were not present presumably due to the Christmas break

Cherries galore - taste testing the different varities

Boxes of cherries from Young

Even though there weren't that many stalls, I did manage to make one purchase:

I HAS cherry pie!

I had it for dessert last night and it was very good - massive chunks of cherry throughout. Yum!

Held at Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC).

Undercover in the large buildings at the northern end of EPIC.
Saturday 8am to 11am

I finished work today (if you can call sitting around and exploring the interwebs work!) at midday, and had a lovely lunch at The Flute Bakery (post coming soon!) and will be off to Sydney this afternoon. Watching Avatar 3D tonight so that should be good!

Hope all my readers a very lovely and Merry Christmas!!!

Christmas Cheer - Koko Black, Canberra

If you haven't finished your Christmas shopping, I think now's the time to:

1) Surrender and face the wrath

2) Do some crazy midnight shopping

3) Last minute shopping on Christmas Eve afternoon aka grab anything in sight

I still haven't finished mine... So I guess my option will be #3 or my personal favourite

4) Go into hiding

Since that's not exactly a realistic option, I'll have to brave the shops which have been getting busier and crowded each time I set foot in a shopping centre. Let's hope that everyone is super organised thus leaving the shops empty for me tomorrow. Haha Wishful thinking?

Anyway, a fail safe Christmas present is chocolate. Which brings me to Koko Black who currently have a Christmas range out. Perfect!

Adorable snowmen which I was so keen to buy, but they were out of the small sized ones! And severely lacking in the white chocolate variety (which was way more cute!)

Hot chocolate. I was tempted to try the new raspeberry or peppermint ice chocolates, but they are gigantic and I can never finish them, so ended up with a trusty hot choccie instead.

Something from their new summer menu:

White chocolate and raspberry cake, raspberry sorbet and a teddy bear pop. The sorbet was delicious, so tart and refreshing!

Cute Christmas gifts

So you can probably guess where I'll be doing the rest of my last minute shopping?

Gus' Cafe, Civic - Canberra

One of Canberra's oldest cafes, Gus' Cafe is the good old trusty meeting place to have coffee. I have fond memories of this being a favourite high school hangout due to it's proximity to the games arcades nearby.

Perfect for comfort food, the menu has barely changed through the years (god, I feel old now!) and my favourites still include the foccacia fingers - warm thick slices of bread topped with melted cheese, sweet chilli and onion (chicken optional) the potato wedges and warm chicken salad. So good! I've also taken to the pumpkin and potato salad which is very good as well.

But this Sunday, I'm here for the breakfast.

Busy as always - it takes a while to actually get noticed by the staff

Perusing the familiar menu

My must have drink - Watermelon Kiss, a yummy concoction of watermelon, mango, pineapple and coconut

Eggs Benedict with hashbrowns and breakfast sausage - the eggs were a bit overcooked but the hashbrowns were good!
