Shanghai Tang - Haymarket, Sydney

Hidden away on George Street, you barely notice the sign or entrance when walking past Shanghai Tang.

It's a weekday lunchtime and the place is barely full but the service is slow and haphazard. They have extensive menus, most with pictures, lots of lunch and dinner sets on offer and they also have a buffet option too.
The main menu - among a pile of other menus

Dinner buffet option

Iced Horlick - my default drink when I'm in Hong Kong style cafes, so malty and delicious!

Shallot pancakes - these were good but quite oily, I felt a bit queasy after eating my share, and I can normally tolerate alot of fried and fatty foods.

Pan fried pork dumplings

These were yummy! Crispy bottoms and juicy on the inside

Crab meat xiao long baos

These were good as well - plenty of soup when biting into it.

A few other things caught my eye on the extensive menu as well, but didn't get a chance to order such as the pumpkin cakes and the dessert xiao long baos. I was a bit turned off from ordering more as the restaurant wasn't even full and the service was so bad.

They took ages to bring our food out, with lengthy times in between each dish. At one point we had to enquire about our last dish as it had been ages. No apologies or anything, It's a Chinese restaurant though so I wasn't expecting much in the service department but I would have expected them to be speedy.

i know what you mean, i had to look around quite a bit to find items! those sales are always horrid as it's a small space and so many people!

xo

p.s. those dumplings look scrumptious! yum

I think they're sadly steadily going down in terms of food and service. I tried the food here when it first opened, returned a couple of times and haven't been back for a year or so. Surprised they're now offering a buffet!

HD: You definitely don't notice it walking past unless you see the sign and read it.

md: The service is pretty bad, and they weren't even busy to "justify" it.

Lily: I've been meaning to try the world square one. It's always packed!

Hehe, and that's what bfs are good for - dragging places!

Chinese places aren't usually known for their services. Those dumplings looks delicious though.
