Nonya by Ginger and Spice

Being too lazy to line up for anything (yes, looking at you Mamak!),  I was keen to try out the new Malaysian restaurant in town - conveniently located in Chinatown, just opposite Mamak on Dixon street.

Nonya by Ginger and Spice is situated upstairs, right next to More More Cha.  They also seem to have a deal going at the moment, $9.80 for a lot of their dishes, including beef rendang and their hainanese chicken rice.

Decisions, decisions!

Watermelon juice

Spring rolls - these were interesting, not the typical spring rolls, the outer layer reminds me of the taro puffs you find in yum cha.

The benchmark dish - Hainanese chicken rice

I'm not expert, but I thought their version was pretty good.

Beef rendang - had this with some plain rice, but should've gotten more of the chicken rice instead, so tasty!

Char kway teow - couldn't resist this on my second visit, it was good but I thought it was a little on the salty side.

Definitely a great place for a Malaysian fix if you're queue-phobic like me, and the deals they have at the moment make it pretty good value.

Rubicon - Griffith, Canberra

A month or so ago, I was down in Canberra for one night for work.  What else is there to do on a Tuesday night, except tick one of the restaurants off my never-ending list of places to try? So off to Rubicon in Griffith it was...

A nice amuse bouche of mini duck arancini - lovely way to start the meal

Pork belly assiette entree -
crisp with chilli lime caramel
truffle and shitake croquette with celeriac remoulade
Rilettes en crute with amontillado jelly

This isn't on the menu anymore but from memory it was a free range duck leg on a bed of broccolini and a potato rosti with various types of mushrooms

Chicken with chestnut and mushroom stuffing, seared scallop, herb gnocchi and parsnip puree

Armagnac jelly with green apple sorbet

Caramelised apple tarte tatin, butterscotch, crème anglaise and vanilla ice cream

A nice spot for a mid-week catch up in Canberra.

Taste of Sydney 2012

After all this miserable weather we've been having lately, it was such a nice surprise when the sun came out to play for Taste of Sydney.  This year's event was held from the 9th to 11th of March - the Thursday session was cancelled due to the torrential rain on the previous night.

Getting there relatively early, meant the crowds hadn't arrived yet, so it was straight down to business ie: food first, and check out the endless stalls later!

First stop - Quarter Twenty One

Slow cooked and caramelised short rib with bone marrow persillade

I enjoyed all the dishes I had when I went to the restaurant and this dish definitely did not disappoint either.

The Sake Restaurant stand

Hiramasa Kingfish ceviche - fresh and zingy flavours, which was lovely by this time of the day as the sun was scorching.

Longrain bar's signature cocktail - Ping Pong, a mixture of lychees and passionfruit pulp with Eristoff Vodka and fresh lime juice

Four in Hand's roast suckling pig with coleslaw and onion ring - wasn't the biggest fan of this dish, the coleslaw was very salty and the meat was missing the best part of roast pig (hello, crackling!)

Four in Hand's piggy

Montpellier's Eton Mess - fancy strawberries and cream, so good!

They had a lot more stalls compared to a few years ago...

Somehow got sucked into trying Absinth:

It burns!

73% with floaties... Mmmm

Honey @ Quarter Twenty One

Cute cupcakes

End of day refreshment at Pure Pops - so yum! This was watermelon, also tried the pineapple and coconut which was delicious.
