Bean Drinking - Crows Nest, Sydney

On the topic of favourite places, Bean Drinking is another one that tops my list. Crows Nest is a great little suburb to go for a weekend walk and have brunch and a coffee or two. 

Bean Drinking is a speciality micro roaster and espresso bar, they also house some tempting breakfast and lunch options and sweet treats.

They sure know their coffee, and on one visit, we order the tasting flight to get a sample of everything. The staff happily divide it into two servings after enquiring whether we were sharing.

A sweet liquor like coffee served in a chilled shot glass - seriously smooth from the slow 5 hour extraction process

Cascara - coffee cherry tea

This was the most interesting one out of the three coffees, with a very subtle, tea-like flavour.

I could not get enough of this hearty breakfast, and especially loved the quinoa and soya bread.

Could not resist something sweet from the display and this cinnamon scroll hit the spot.

If you order one thing here, please make it this affogato - I wanted to lick the bowl clean, it's THAT good.

At Restaurant - Crows Nest, Sydney

@! is, in my opinion, one of the best places for sushi in Sydney. The restaurant is located on the Pacific highway strip in crows nest, and is a small and unassuming shop. Step inside and you'll be greeted by friendly staff and if you're lucky enough to sit at the bar, the sushi chef is enthusiastic and so much fun to watch. I always try to get a seat at the bar during my visits here.

I can never resist ordering miso eggplant when I see it on the menu, and @!'s version is very good, with a generous slathering of the miso sauce.

Edamame

These are served warm and are very addictive. I am normally not a fan of edamame but @! changed my mind with their version.

If you order one thing here, it would be this sushi platter. Every piece is meticulously put together with such precision, and it shines through. This is a little difficult to share, as you end up wanting everything to yourself.

Do yourself a favour and try the sushi here - it is a little on the pricier side but you do get what you pay for and it's well worth it!

Red Spice Road - QV, Melbourne

During my recent trip to Melbourne, I caught up with the lovely miss J for lunch at Red Spice Road. Located in the QV building, Red Spice Road is a South-East Asian restaurant with a focus on dishes that can be shared.

Tempting mocktails

Red Dragon

Blood orange, house made vanilla syrup, fresh blackberries built with fresh lemon, finished with pink grapefruit

Since I was not drinking, I opted for a mocktail instead. A nice, tart and refreshing blend to kick-start the appetite.

Green Asian

Freshly muddled kiwi fruit shaken with cloudy apple juice and coconut syrup, topped with toasted coconut.

Complimentary starter of duck consomme 

Duck broth with minced duck, shitake mushroom and green onion. This was very flavoursome, but a little on the salty side.

We opted for the lunch banquet, which allowed us to choose three main dishes. Serving sizes were on the generous side and we struggled to finish them between the three of us, it would have been perfect for four people.

Vientane style beef curry with eggplant and snake beans

Melt in the mouth beef curry with the smooth and creamy sauce the perfect accompaniment to rice.

Pan fried barramundi with bok choy, bamboo shoots and roasted chilli paste

This was my favourite dish out of the three, with really beautiful and fresh flavours.

Pork belly with apple slaw, chilli caramel and black vinegar

I enjoyed the fresh flavours and the generous servings were a nice surprise, as I was expecting something a little smaller. The only downside is that we were not allowed to takeaway the leftovers - such a shame as we were bursting to the seams, unable to fit in anymore, but the food went to waste.

After such a huge lunch, we wandered around and soaked in the lovely Melbourne vibe, with a coffee (or two!) Such a great way to spend the Easter long weekend.

Govinda's - Darlinghurst, Sydney

Govinda's is a Sydney institution, home of the vegetarian buffet and comfortably cushioned movie room. 

Menu is quite straightforward as the food offerings are all included in the buffet, with the option of adding on non-alcoholic drinks and dessert.

Food is delicious and wholesome - with my favourite being the delightfully crispy cauliflower pakoras - they are absolutely addictive!

After stuffing myself silly until I couldn't fit anymore in, it was up to the movie room to watch Samsara. Had to be careful not to fall asleep on the super comfortable cushions after such a big meal.
And of course, after the movie, we ventured over to Messina for some dessert

Such a great night out! Govinda's movie and meal deal definitely beats squishing into a packed cinema.

Jap's Table - Darlington, Sydney


After hearing about Jap's Table and it having the best yakitori in Sydney, I had to pay a visit. Located in Darlington, it's a little out of the way, but well worth it to be greeted by a bustling shopfront and a menu bursting with all the regular Japanese delights, in particular yakitori and ramen.

The menu is filled with lots of smaller sized dishes, which I love the idea of, as it means we can order and try more things. 

Complimentary starter of chicken skin

This is an interesting way to start the meal, with a small bowl of chicken skin. Not quite the crispy variety, I'm afraid, it has more of a rubbery texture which takes some getting used to. 

Wagyu beef yakitori

The wagyu beef yakitori, on the other hand, is a pleasure to eat with a wonderfully smoky flavour.

which is basically an entree with a bit of everything include sliced pork, egg and some vegetables

Mushroom lover

The aptly named mushroom lover is a lovely mixture of oyster, button, chinese and enoki mushrooms in a clear broth.

Beef tendon

Half serve Yokohama ramen

The ramen broth was quite light in flavour with the noodles a tad too soft. I like how you can order half serves of the ramen dishes as I can't usually finish a whole one.
Celery and chicken thigh skewer 

So tender and with a deliciously smoky flavour from the charcoal. Definitely one of the best yakitori I've had in Sydney!
