Pop up patisserie @ Brewtown Newtown - Newtown, Sydney

Is there anything more glorious than entering a cafe and seeing rows upon rows of glorious pastries? I think not, so ventured over early to Brewtown Newtown when I heard they were opening their pop-up patisserie again.

On the menu were a multitude of cruffins (a hybrid croissant muffin) and a range of other tempting pastries.

Pineapple and coconut Brewnut

Love anything tropical flavoured, especially when it involves coconut!

Ispahan danish

The extremely pretty and ever-popular combination of rose, raspberry and lychee

Orange and poppyseed danish

Nutella Cruffin

Studded with hazelnuts and with a decadent nutella filling. The cruffin was lovely and flaky, and really just reminded me of a round croissant.

It was hard to pick a favourite as they were all pretty good. I would probably have to say either the Ispahan danish, as I love the fruity combination of lychees and raspberries, or the Nutella Cruffin, as nothing beats a generous slathering of nutella!

In the blink of an eye, it's almost the end for 2014... Happy new year everyone! Hope 2015 is even bigger and better, filled with lots of adventures, fabulous company and delicious food!

Elbow Room Espresso - Chatswood, Sydney

After initially planning to have breakfast at a cafe across the road (long story short, lax opening times and witnessing the said cafe spray a can of raid all over the coffee prep area) we promptly hightailed it out of there, and decided to eat at this cute little cafe, Elbow Room Espresso.

Banana smoothie

Elbow room de hot dog

An impressive hot dog with chorizo, a perfectly cooked sunny side up egg and mustard. The gherkins served on the side help to cut through the richness.

French toast

A tempting combination of grilled banana, berry compote, pistachios and ricotta. A perfect choice for a little something sweet, with the fruit and ricotta balancing the dish out and making it lighter.

Elbow Room Espresso is a great little cafe to drop into whilst doing a spot of shopping in Chatswood. It even opens at 7:30am, perfect for the early birds.

SoCal - Neutral Bay, Sydney

SoCal is a cool little Californian style bar, located north of the bridge in Neutral Bay. SoCal is part of the Applejack Hospitality group, the people behind bars like The Botanist and Bondi Hardware, and recently celebrated it's first birthday in style.

Summery cocktails - Margarita & Garden party

The margarita was a a refreshing blend of Reposado tequila, Cointreau, lime, and a dash of sugar and half salt rim.

The Garden Party was a lovely floral mix of blueberry infused Tanqueray gin, elderflower liqueur, spiced blueberry syrup, rhubarb bitters and basil.

Sriracha chicken quesadillas

There was no shortage of tempting offers of food, including moreish corn chips and guacamole; flank steak and chimmichurri skewers, and spiced eggplant tostadas which went down very well with the cocktails.

Happy 1st birthday, SoCal!

Jiangnan Kitchen - Haymarket, Sydney

There always seems to be new restaurants popping up around the Haymarket area, more than I can seem to keep a track of! One of these new places is Jiangnan Kitchen on Goulburn street.

Noodle soup with vegetable and homemade meatballs

The soup is nice and clear, and the meatballs remind of of fish balls, though these are light and springy.

crispy rice with this sweet and sour pork and beef

This was an interesting dish with the crispy rice being pieces of puffed rice, reminding me of rice bubbles. A creative idea, but I didn't think it worked well in practice, there was way too much sauce which might have worked better with a bowl of regular rice.

spring onion pancake

Overall, not a bad place to grab a bite to eat. Would be keen to try some more items from the menu - it seemed like every second table had a hot pot looking dish, so perhaps that's the way to go?

Miami Cuba - Manly, Sydney

I've been working back lately so have managed to accumulate a lot of time off - beneficial for when the bestie is in town from Melbourne and it's a beautiful 35 degree beach weather weekday!

We decide to head to Manly via the scenic ferry trip from Circular Quay and feast on fish and chips on the beach.

Upstairs is another bar and seating around - such a cool space with bright tropical wallpaper and retro furnishings reminiscent of 1950's Cuba.

We pick a lovely spot that overlooks Manly beach, sitting right next to the window means we get the cooling sea breeze.

El Cubano

Miami Cuba's version of the famous Cuban sandwich - pulled spiced pork, smoked ham, smokey pickle, american cheese, chipotle mayo, served on house made bun and with fries.

Miami Cuba is in a fabulous location, it has nice little cocktail list, and the menu has a variety of tempting options. Would definitely be keen to return and try out some of the other dishes or the breakfast!

Lentil as anything (with a sneaky drink at Earl's Juke Joint) - Newtown, Sydney

I love lazy Sunday catch ups. It's a time to unwind, relax and recharge for the week to come. One of my favourite things to do is go for a walk and explore.

On this particular Sunday, we decide to go for a wander to Newtown after checking out the Glebe Street Fair. First stop is Earl's Juke Joint, a fun small bar that has been refurbished from an old meat shop. We grab a seat at the spacious wooden bar, and order a couple of well-crafted cocktails.

Memphis Slim (on the right)
Vodka, ginger wine, pear juice, lime juice and spiced vanilla syrup

El Chooky
A fruity blend of coconut tequila, Campari, lime, grapefruit bitters and agave

We then popped next door to Lentil as anything for a wholesome vegetarian meal. Lentil as anything is a not for profit organisation where customers pay what they feel the food is worth. There's a nice community vibe, and this trust setup allows everyone the opportunity to dine out.

Some warm homemade chai to start with

The menu consisted of four different daily options, we chose two dishes to share: Vegetable, lentil curry with rice and salad, with the other dish mainly consisting of beans with a salad and fried bread.

I love the concept and vibe of the place, such a great idea. The food is very simple and it feels like you're dining at a friend's place - very homely.

Bread & Circus Wholefoods Canteen - Alexandria, Sydney

Bread and Circus definitely ticks all the boxes - it is vibrant and has a casual and fun vibe, plus the food is fresh and wholesome. I'm a huge fan of the daily salads, and since Arthur Street Kitchen is no longer, I find myself hankering after a really well done salad. Bread and Circus happily fulfils the craving!

Located in a lovely sun-filled warehouse space in Alexandria, Bread & Circus is decorated with colourful decor and crates of fruit and vegetables everywhere. During a weekend lunchtime visit, the place was quite busy but we manage to squeeze onto a share table within a few minutes of waiting.

Iced coffee

Perfect for a warm day, though a tad on the bland side due to the ice.

Something green

A refreshing cold pressed juice with mix of kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon.

Goats corn pumpkin biodynamic egg frittata

This was amazing. The frittata was so flavoursome with the dollops of goats cheese throughout, along with corn, pumpkin, kale, caramelised red onion, plus thyme and basil. Even better were the daily salads served on the side including:

Roast baby carrot, zucchini, wild rocket & feta

Lemony broccolini cabbage flower stem & farro
Charred yellow bean & crunchy cavalo nero
Fresh cabbage kale & two kinds of sprout
Smoky corn, wild rocket leaves, lime & mayo

Seasonal fruit plate

Seasonal fresh fruit with biodynamic yoghurt and a drizzle of agave syrup. A lovely sweet way to end the meal. The fruit included blood orange, peach, pears, mango, strawberries and kiwi fruit.

We ordered the frittata and fruit plate to share between two, and it was perfect portion-wise.

Verdict? A great space with food that's fresh, healthy and wholesome. What's not to love?

Christine Manfield Desserts for the launch of Dessert Divas - Nomad, Sydney

Having been a huge fan of the amazing desserts at Universal, I was over the moon when I heard that Christine Manfield would be offering her desserts for a few nights at Nomad to celebrate the launch of her new book, Dessert Divas.

A fruity combination of passionfruit curd, coconut and nougat crumble, mango, coconut cloud, caramelised white chocolate ice cream and passionfruit sorbet.

Mocha bomb

Coffee lovers rejoice! This chocolate mousse dome, date espresso caramel bombs and espresso ice cream was fantastic. The espresso ice cream was full-bodied and strong, perfectly paired with the chocolate domes, which opened to reveal the sticky rich caramel inside.

Always a fabulous meal to be had at Nomad and this was no exception. We had a few mains before digging into dessert and everything was perfection.

As for Christine Manfield's desserts, wishing there was a more permanent location to visit!

Sushi of Masuya - Haymarket, Sydney

Masuya is one of the first places the Mr and I first went on a date, so I was keen to check out Sushi of Masuya when it popped up where Musashi used to be, near Capitol Theatre.

Deluxe sushi platter

Sashimi platter

Just like Masuya, the sushi and sashimi here is of high quality and fresh.

Deep fried oysters

The deep fried oysters come out freshly fried and are extremely moreish. We end up ordering a second round of these.

Definitely a nice sushi spot for a bit of pre-theatre dining. I'm keen to check out some of the bentos too, which are only available during lunch.

Long Men Lou Vegetarian Restaurant, Chi Lin Nunnery - Diamond Hill, Hong Kong

A world away from the hustle and bustle and skyscrapers that Hong Kong is renowned for, lies the Chi Lin Nunnery.

Chi Lin Nunnery is a large temple complex, was established in 1934, and houses Buddhist relics, lotus ponds, and the Nan Lian garden, a beautiful and scenic public garden.

There is also a vegetarian restaurant at the Chi Lin Nunnery, Long Men Lou, which offers dishes that are free from MSG, plus low in fat, sugar and salt.

Mixed entree platter

Their signature appetiser dish is a taste of five small dishes, all with quite interesting textures.

Braised shitake mushrooms

Stuffed bean curd rolls

Sweet and sour bean curd

A bit like a vegetarian take on sweet and sour pork, with plenty of capsicum scattered throughout the dish, along with fresh chunks of pineapple.

Walnut dessert

Quite enjoyed this creamy and sweet dessert soup.

Overall, a lovely and fresh buddhist vegetarian meal in the nice surroundings of the temple grounds.
