I have heard great recommendations for Food Society in Darlinghurst, so jumped at the chance to try out the vodka high tea.
High tea is the perfect way to catch up with a girlfriend - a long leisurely afternoon filled with fun cocktails, savoury canapés, finger sandwiches and handmade sweet treats.
The venue is a bit different from the usual high tea venue - a combination of kitsch mismatched furniture and decor, and vintage posters as wallpaper on the back wall.
Russian donkey tea
A refreshing blend of premium rye vodka, fresh lime and ginger infused syrup, ginger beer, fresh mint and green tea, served with the cutest floral paper straws.
Signature spiced apple pie cocktail
Zubrowka bison grass vodka, four hour infused spiced apple juice, with cinnamon, star anise and lemon zest shaken over ice and served with fresh green apple juice.
There is quite a bit of food in this high tea, so it comes out in stages. The first is the savoury canapés which we enjoy as our cocktails are being made.
The canapés consist of:
Goat's cheese tartlet - shortcrust pastry filled with goat's cheese, pine nuts and mint, baked and topped with caramelised fennel and parsnip
Salmon pastrami - green tea smoked Tasmanian salmon pastrami, pure chamomile flower jelly, shiso leaves and celeriac cream on truffle salt toast.
Retro classic duck vol au vent - confit pepe's duck, pan fried chanterelles and chestnut cream and white truffle.
The staff were more than happy to cater for a vegetarian - a lot of the options are already vegetarian friendly. With the other options, the meat fillings being substituted with ingredients such as mushrooms in the vol au vents, and veggie sandwich fillings.
The best chicken sandwich - char grilled brioche finger sandwich, house smoked lilydale free range chicken and tarragon, duck egg hollandaise, baby herbs and nasturtium flowers
Classic cucumber sandwich - shaved cucumber, chervil cream cheese, pink peppercorns and salmon caviar
The second round included all the sandwiches. My favourite were the creamy chicken sandwiches, so moreish! The sandwiches servings are very generous and I like how they come out toasted.
Sweet treat trifle - petite cups filled with vodka cure rhubarb jelly, pomegranate and acai custard, vanilla sponge, sweet pickled north Australian hibiscus flowers, pomegranate and acai pearl salad
Alfajores - shortbread biscuit filled with dulce de leche
Mini berry macaron
Czech style honey cake - layered spiced honey cake, salted caramel cream, house made honeycomb and caramelised local pears
Dark chocolate truffle of lavender and earl grey
There's no scones offered in this high tea - instead it's a interesting mix of sweets served on a platter. My favourite is the deliciously nutty honey cake.
There's a great range of loose leaf teas on the menu - I go for the jasmine with pear
For those who still haven't organised their Valentine's Day, Food Society will transform into a classic formal setting - white table cloths, vintage candles, flowers and live music entertainment by the Swinging Gypsies. There will be high tea during the day (11:30-4:30pm) and a 5-course degustation for dinner.
