I'm moving work locations starting next week, which means no more Surry Hills lunching. I've been making the most out of my remaining lunch opportunities by trying out all the places on my hit list; one of these being newcomer, Nel. Restaurant on Wentworth Avenue.
The small underground restaurant space is at basement level, with an open plan kitchen where you can watch all the action happen. The lunch set menu is fabulous value at $35 per head.
Green peas, ham
We start off the meal with a croquette, filled with tender slow cooked pork cheek, and served with a fresh green pea puree dipping sauce. An inventive and flavoursome dish.
Sardines, bread, apple, celery
The second course was quite pretty, with the thin slices of radish and perfect tiny cubes of green apple. The tart apple flavours and lightness of the celery was a great match with the crisp pieces of sardines.
Beef cheek, broccolini, beetroot and walnuts
Blue eye trevalla, quinoa, orange, fennel
Both main dishes were superb; my favourite being the lovely combination of perfectly cooked blue eye trevalla with the fresh citrus flavours.
Chocolate, coconut, saffron, milk
A nice way to end the meal on a sweet note. Quite a light dessert; especially enjoyed the combination of the coconut 'snow', with the creamy chocolate, saffron ice cream and thin crisp wafers.
Served warm, these mini eccles cakes (a traditional English cake filled with currants) were extremely moreish. The ideal size for devouring in one bite; I wished there were more of them!
