Maslow's - Naremburn, Sydney

After hearing great things about the original Maslow's in Pymble, I took the opportunity on a recent bushwalking trip to make a pit stop for breakfast at the new Maslow's in Naremburn.

Macchiato

The menu at Maslow's has a Japanese influence, with a focus on pretty and delicate dishes.

Sakura Bombe

With smoky dulche de leche, oat and matcha sponge and mango. I thought this was an interesting and visually beautiful dish, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. I liked each component individually, but not together.

Eggplant Mikado

Soy eggplant, onsen egg, mikado sauce and herbs. The citrus sauce gives the eggplant a nice freshness to it.

With great coffee and an impressive menu, Maslow's is definitely a nice addition to Naremburn - there's plenty of parking around too which is a plus.

The Wedge - Glebe, Sydney

It's often the service that makes a cafe a regular drop in spot for me (along with good food and coffee of course!) The most recent great service I've had is at The Wedge; a lovely little hole-in-the-wall local gem in Glebe.
Macchiato

Soy latte

The coffee here is five senses and very good. I'm always impressed when cafes can manage latte art on soy without it turning into a blobby mess.

The Wedge affogato

I love an affogato with a twist. The Wedge's version is served with cold drip coffee, ice cream and crunchy granola. It's absolutely delicious, and is basically a meal in itself with the addition of the granola, which adds sweetness and crunch.

Salad of cauliflower cous cous

A healthy salad with garlic and thyme roasted parsnip, almonds, sultanas and pepitas, and served with cauliflower that has been shredded into tiny pieces to resemble cous cous.

Sesame crusted eggplant sandwich

An asian inspired sandwich; shaved sprouts, roasted cashews and herb salad on soy and linseed bread.

The meals at The Wedge are simple and delicious; I can see why it is such a popular spot for a weekend brunch. There was a slight mix-up with our sandwich order, which was promptly and kindly fixed up by the waitstaff - they even took the charge off the bill which I thought was excellent service.

The Rabbit Hole Organic Tea Bar - Redfern, Sydney

The Rabbit Hole Organic Tea Bar is a beautiful new space; it's spacious, airy with plenty of natural light. It's a tea lover's paradise, with an extensive tea menu that includes everything from tea lattes to sparkling iced teas.

The staff are absolutely lovely too, which enhances the whole experience.

The space is used well, with tea displays and merchandise placed around the cafe.

Sweets cabinet

The sweets cabinet at the front counter is filled with lots of tempting and pretty treats.

It's an order at the counter affair, and the table numbers are playing cards. Cute idea! (Alice in Wonderland, down the 'rabbit hole', perhaps?)

Summer fling latte

A flirty pine-lime splice with a hint of coconut. I love the idea of a tea latte, especially when it comes in such a delightful range of flavours! The summer fling is a light, fruity and subtle.

Iced white peony and pomegranate sparkling

The Rabbit Hole has their sparkling teas on tap. This is a delicate and light white tea with pomegranate. This is a refreshing and thirst quenching iced tea that is perfect for summer; it's a breath of fresh air from all the sugary iced teas out there.

Farro salad

Most of the menu items at The Rabbit Hole are quite light and fresh, with tea incorporate in some way or another. This farro salad is served with fresh spring herbs and a Ceylon Citrus vinaigrette.

Topped toast

The topped toast comes with your choice of bread (I chose the five grain) and topping. This version included avocado, edamame and sprouts with Sencha dressing.

Raspberry zing marshmallow

There were two flavours of marshmallows during my visit - matcha and raspberry zing. The raspberry zing marshmallow was pillowy soft and tasted quite true to the real thing, with a touch of sherbet.

Lavender shortbread

Couldn't resist getting this gorgeous floral shortbread.

Being a tea lover, I can definitely see this becoming a regular visit during the warm summer months.

Night Noodle Markets 2015 - Hyde Park, Sydney

It's that glorious time of the year again, Good Food Month, which means the night noodle markets at Hyde Park.  This year, I have the advantage of working literally across the road from Hyde Park, so conveniently dropped in as soon as it opened the first day.

Black Star Pastry x N2 gelato

Teafogato

A super refreshing blend of strawberry watermelon cake smashed with N2 gelato, mixed with a Tippity Hibiscus Rooibos tea soda and freeze dried cherries. Absolutely loved the idea of a tea version of an affogato and this was perfectly executed.

Andy Bowdy ice cream truck

Andy Bowdy's ice cream truck was an opening night special only, which is a shame because the soft serve was fantastic!

The Happy Ending

Pandan soft serve, coconut rice custard, mango, coconut milk jam and toasted rice. Definitely a happy camper with this one - mango and coconut are a match made in heaven. The pandan flavour was quite subtle, making it a perfect base for the rest of the ingredients to shine. The toasted rice added a nice crunch to the sundae.

Hoy Pinoy

Pork belly skewers from Hoy Pinoy

The sticky and sweet skewers at Hoy Pinoy are always delicious (hence why there always seems to be a never ending queue!)

Cebu lechon from Hoy Pinoy

The cebu lechon comes with atchara sauce and rice. Loved the crispy pork crackling.

The lines seem to be the longest here, though the team are very efficient at serving and it moves fairly quickly.

Eggplant and miso pita from Jugemu and Shimbashi

Soba salad from Jugemu and Shimbashi

I feel like most of the savoury dishes are quite expensive for what you get and it's definitely better value dining at the actual restaurant itself. On the other hand, the night noodle market does have a great, lively atmosphere and is a nice thing to do on a balmy spring evening. It's also a great opportunity to try bits and pieces from a variety of places.

The desserts were as good as ever. Messina never disappoints with their special offerings:

Messina's Lucky fortune bar

David Bao-wy

I thought this might be a bit heavy due to the deep fried bun, but I was so wrong. This was perfection; salted coconut sorbet, white chocolate mango ganache and crushed cashews. As I mentioned previously, mango and coconut = winning combination. Do yourself a favour and order one of the Messina baos.

Great balls of fryer

Messina comes up with the best giggle inducing names, this time is no exception. This deep fried ice cream has a satisfyingly crunchy exterior; the inside is filled with thai custard gelato. The ball is placed on top of the 'Messina tinned fruit salad'

SEFA Kitchen - Bondi, Sydney

SEFA Kitchen is a charming little middle eastern restaurant located on Bondi Road. It's a hidden gem away from the busy beach strip and it's quite cosy and quaint.  It was the perfect spot for a late afternoon lunch as the restaurant conveniently is open late for all day breakfast/lunch on the weekend.

Turkish coffee

I love the intricate cup and saucer that the turkish coffee comes in! This tiny coffee is very strong and sweet.

I rather enjoy the fact that SEFA has an all day menu, meaning that we can eat a mix of breakfast dishes and salads for lunch.

SEFA kitchen
Pumpkin fatteh

Fatteh is a classic Levantine breakfast dish. This salad was a delicious mix of fatteh (pieces of flatbread, toasted to a crisp), sweet pumpkin, chickpeas and sour yoghurt.

Fried brussels sprouts with almond tarator

This was hands-down my favourite dish; the brussels sprouts, cooked with middle eastern spices, and were so flavoursome. Do yourself a favour and order this dish!

Corn cake

The corn cake is fantastic combined with the avocado, beetroot relish and haloumi; it's also a very generous serving.

Overall, I was throughly impressed with all the dishes we ordered. Definitely a venue to keep in mind for a fine middle eastern option when in the Bondi area.

Mrs Mi -- Chatswood, Sydney

Mrs Mi is a newly opened restaurant in Chatswood Chase, showcasing food from the Shanxi province in Northern China.

There's a lovely background story behind the name - Mrs Mi always loved to travel around on her bike looking for delectable street food. Ten years ago, her daughter decided to retrace her mother's footsteps, but discovered that these street vendors were no longer around.

Mrs Mi is all about bringing the nostalgic flavours back to life, with traditional Chinese recipes and a touch of the modern in the form of a robot chef.

The restaurant is located in a shopfront on the food court level of Chatswood Chase. It's a full house and buzzing on a Wednesday evening.

A glimpse of the robot chef

Robot chef in action, slicing the noodles

The robot chef shaves the noodles quickly and with such precision.

Cherry tomatoes in plum juice

This entree dish does the job with getting the appetite going; these cherry tomatoes were quite plump and quite sweet, no doubt thanks to the addition of the plum juice.

Spicy crab Xiao long bao

The dumplings at Mrs Mi were on point. Starting with these delicious spicy crab xiao long bao; served piping hot, the soup in these dumplings was plentiful and very flavoursome. The spiciness was very subtle. (coming from someone who really can only handle mild chilli)

Crab meat dumplings with beetroot pastry

I love the idea of coloured dumplings. The beetroot flavour is not detectable, but it adds a nice colour, and the crab meat filling inside is delightful.

Chicken dumplings with purple sweet potato pastry

Like the other dumplings, these were also quite tasty. I find that chicken dumplings can sometimes be a bit bland or dry, but this was not the case at all.

Frost flower pan fried chicken dumpling

Some pan fried dumplings to mix it up a bit. The crunchy 'frost flower' layer was a delight to eat - thin and crisp.

Shrimp dumplings with spinach pastry

Szechwan style shredded pork with chilli sauce, served with golden buns

The shredded pork with chilli sauce packed a punch in flavour. Served with golden buns, it is a bit like a naughty version of sang choy bao.

The golden bun conveniently has a hole in the underside to fit the pork filling

Mrs Mi signature pork mince with noodles

Stir fried beef with chilli noodles

Both the noodle dishes feature the robot shaved noodles, with the pork mince version being a common dish in Northern Chinese cuisine.

Taiwan style fried chicken

Mrs Mi fried rice with chilli

Coconut sago with watermelon

Coconut sago is probably my favourite asian dessert, and Mrs Mi's rendition is nice and refreshing, with the addition of watermelon pieces.

Overall, a nice casual restaurant to catch a meal at in Chatswood Chase. I was especially impressed with the dumplings, and will definitely be back for more of these!
