Cafe Oratnek is a cute cafe in Redfern; opened by ex-Bills head chef, Kenny Takayama. The cafe is housed in a cosy terrace, with some outdoor seating perfectly located to soak in the sunshine.
The counter display is full of baked goodies, mostly matcha flavoured.
Iced coffee & fizzy rhubarb ginger beer
My rhubarb ginger beer totally hits the spot; it tastes of fresh ginger and is perfect match with the tartness of the rhubarb.
Spicy pork stuffed chicken wings
I love stuffed chicken wings, and don't see them often so it's always a must-order when I see one on offer. Oratnek's version is served with a homemade chilli jam, and chips sprinkled with green laver. The chips are absolutely delicious, and remind me of those shaker fries with seaweed flavouring.
200g of pork fillet katsu, cabbage, Japanese BBQ sauce and mustard. It's a task to try and fit one of these monsters in your mouth; once I did manage to take a bite though, I was rewarded with a layer of crunchy skin with juicy pork fillet inside.
Calamari, spicy cabbage slaw salad with cucumber and herbs
The tender calamari is served with a Thai influenced salad, with herbs such as mint, parsley, coriander and basil.
I was tossing up between getting the matcha lamington or tiramisu - the tiramisu won out in the end. The tiramisu is dense and creamy; the matcha flavour is subtle compared to the Cafe Cre Asion offerings.
I loved the dishes at Oratnek, and will most definitely be back to try the other options on the menu too.
